Winona Ryder professional Winona Ryder was born on Winona Minnesota. She was named by her parents in honor of the town in which her birthplace was. Her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder's dad was born into the Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. There are two younger half siblings, Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder was born in the United States and moved with her family to Mendocino County California at the age of seven. They didn't even have electricity. Ryder was an avid bookworm and spent most of her time reading books because she was not able to watch TV. Ryder, then 12, was enrolled in the American Conservatory Theatre for acting classes in 1983. In 1986, she got her first major-screen appearance in the film Lucas when she was just 15 years old. Ryder was bullied in high school. Her performance career, as she had hoped that it would aid her. It did not work out. Still she continued pursuing the goals she had set. In 1988, she got her breakthrough role in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder kept playing successful roles in several movies. In 1993 she received two nominations at the Academy Awards. One of was for her performance on the film The Age of Innocence.
