Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. When she was a little girl, Houston started singing professionally in her church's choir. She was a backing vocalist for Chaka Khosn's song from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mother. In 1981, she briefly did a stint as a fashion model, and was featured on the Seventeen album cover. Also, she provided the backing vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls.
